Personal Review: My roommate Taylor likes it when people read out loud to her. I love reading to people. She love Narnia. I’m borderline obsessed with Narnia. Therefore, we decided to try and read the entire Narnia series before April. I actually finished reading this back in November – the 23rd, to be exact, but I’ve procrastinated getting the review up. My bad.

I think that The Magician’s Nephew is an overlooked gem in the Narnia series. The first time I read it I was kind of “Meh, I just want to get to LWW,” because I was prepping myself for the movie. But every time I’ve gone back and reread this particular book, I’m reminded of just how much wit and humor good ol’ Clive Staples Lewis was capable of weaving into his stories. Some parts just make me giggle/laugh out loud, and that’s quite a feat to be accomplished when it comes to books. It just takes a lot for me to laugh when reading.

If Lewis had had more time, I have no doubt he could have written more about Narnia. Part of me believes that he wanted to. I mean, there are so many branches that could come off of this book alone! The tree that was planted on the banks of the river to keep the White Witch at bay – obviously something happened to it that made it lose its powers. What’s the story behind the tree? That intrigued me the most this time.

And where in the heck did Polly get those toffees to make the Toffee Tree?! I don’t think it mentions anywhere where she got them, unless I just missed it. Does anyone know? And why was the Toffee Tree not mentioned in the later books?! What happens to the Toffee Tree?

Just as with the other Narnia books, there are some gorgeous passages in this volume. My particular favorite is when Aslan is creating Narnia. Oh my goodness, to hear stars sing … that would sound so lovely and wonderful.

If you haven’t read this book in the series yet, you are truly missing out. It’s a delight.

Hey there! My name is Kim. I was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder in 2020, though my entire life I’ve struggled with depression. Getting my diagnosis was a huge relief. At the same time, though, I felt a bit lost. There were so many things I needed to adjust to as I learned more about how my bipolar disorder affected me, but I felt like I couldn’t find the help I needed. I decided to turn Kim on a Limb into a space where I could talk openly about my bipolar and also share the resources that have made my life easier.
