One year ago, the world lost a wonderful man and a poignant actor. Not only was Robin Williams a comedic genius, he was an actor of multiple palettes and could make you cry and feel all the feels just as much as he could make you laugh.

A lot of kids from my generation remember Robin best as the voice of the Genie from Aladdin. I like to remember him best, though, as Professor John Keating, the influential English teacher from Dead Poets Society.

Why do I loves this character so much? Because he gave a passionate speech that, quite literally, changed my life.

I’d known ever since I was in elementary school that I wanted to major in English. I knew my life’s work would involve words one way or another. But when people began questioning the importance of majoring in English, I doubted a little. Was it really worth it?

The first time I saw this film as a teenager, those words resonated with me:

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”

Poetry may not be my medium or genre, but this speech applies to all facets of English. It proclaims my passion for literature and language.

The moment Robin Williams finished this beautiful speech, I was cemented in my determination to be an English major and change the world with words – to try to touch and heal the weary soul, the burdened heart, and give a voice to those who can’t find the right words.

Thank you, O Captain, My Captain. I stand on my desk to you.

Hey there! My name is Kim. I was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder in 2020, though my entire life I’ve struggled with depression. Getting my diagnosis was a huge relief. At the same time, though, I felt a bit lost. There were so many things I needed to adjust to as I learned more about how my bipolar disorder affected me, but I felt like I couldn’t find the help I needed. I decided to turn Kim on a Limb into a space where I could talk openly about my bipolar and also share the resources that have made my life easier.
